Globalisation is a very trendy topic these days, and often connected with anxieties about national identity. Should we get sick of it or, contrary keep it and never let go? Will Polish national identity change after Poland has joined the European Union?
To my mind that discussion is pointless. I believe each person, brought up in a certain country and nation, has national identity. It was brought into our minds and hearts during the process of socialisation and along with our most important values, is a part of our identity. Therefore it cannot be destroyed or deleted, as it has been internalised too deeply. It is possible to deny it verbally, or even put it out to subconsciousness. Nevertheless it will always have an affect on us, no matter where we are or live.
I am not trying to say that national identity equals patriotism. It doesnt have to. What is more, it can change and modify during our lives . all new experiences that affect our identity influence on national identity as well.
The thing I wanted to stress is that, in my opinion, this process has nothing to do with globalisation. Certainly people are interested in global changes, but only to some extent. What is more important for them is their family and street. Thats why we need tolerance to be able to cope and cooperate with people that have different national identities in this multicultural world.
